Before & After School Communications:
The Program - Grade 1-5:
Our daily programs are planned in advance and approved by management. The balanced schedule for each day includes quiet games and active play both indoors and outdoors. On good weather days, most activities will take place outdoors. From 3:30-4:15, there are three choices of activities in three different locations, with an experienced Program Leader, Counselors and Junior Counselors in each space. At 4:15 each day participants are presented with day’s activities and information on any exciting events that are coming up. From 4:30-5:30, participants will again choose which activity location they want to go to (Mon, Wed, Fri) or they will join their club (Tues & Thurs). From 5:30-6:00pm, we offer quieter games and activities while the participants are signed out by a parent.
Activities are planned around a specific theme each month. Theme and activity information is available in our monthly e-newsletter sent to all participants.
Some examples of our favourite special events: Twinkle Show, Senators Game, Sleepover, Spooktacular Movie Night, and Fall & Spring family BBQs.
Our grade 1-5 After-School and Youth Zone program has ‘club days’ that run on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 6-8 weeks. Participants will sign up for their choice of clubs one week prior to the start date. Clubs are skill-based and developmental, and participants who choose a Tuesday Club or Thursday Club are committed to that group for the full session. Some examples: Glee, LEGO, Adventure Sports, Culinary, Drama, Cartooning, Fashion, Carpentry, Electronics, Diabolo with “The Cowguys”, and Pottery.
The Program – Youth Zone (Grade 6)
This program has been developed to cater to the needs of our Grade 6 participants. The Youth Zone program is focused on empowering young teens with confidence and self-esteem. Each day, participants head to their own room location where they can chill and decompress from the day. Some program highlights include leadership opportunities with our younger programs, weekly clubs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Video Game Fridays. Youth Zone also runs their own special events including a Youth Zone Sleepover and Graduation Trip.
Swimming is integrated into the after school program for children in all grades. Each Friday, the After School program has a swim time from 4:00-4:30pm and participants are encouraged to bring their bathing suits and towels on Fridays.
Our After School program has designated group swim lesson times. These programs last for 9 weeks and continue throughout the school year:
Afterschool Swim Lessons: Mondays, 3:30-4:20 and 4:40-5:20pm.
Participants who have registered for these specific swim lessons will be escorted to and from the pool by a staff member. Please note that we do not accommodate any other swim lessons during our program hours.
Transportation is provided for students from Broadview Public School (walking school bus), Churchill Alternative School & Woodroffe Public School (chartered bus). For all other schools, please contact your child’s school to make bussing arrangements, or call us so that we can help to make arrangements. All participants are met as they get off the bus and signed in with one of our Program Supervisors. Students at Broadview Public School are signed in at the dismissal bell at their designated meeting spot in the gymnasium before walking back to the centre. Parents of any child that does not arrive to Dovercourt’s Afterschool program will be phoned by a Supervisor immediately to ensure that the child is accounted for.
We offer a payment plan of 10 equal payments of $325 that can be set up using a credit card or EFT. This includes a non-refundable deposit due at the time of registration
Program Fees for 2017/ 2018
Registration in these programs is for the entire school year, and the fees below are based on a 10-month program. We offer a scheduled payment plan, with the program fee divided into 10 equal payments of 10% each:
- Breakfast Club, Before School (grade 1-6): full year $2120; each payment $212
- After School Program (grade 1-6): full year $3250; each payment $325
New to Dovercourt?
For those new to Dovercourt Recreation Centre, the first day of After School can be as scary as the first day of school no matter what grade you’re in. For that reason, we recommend you bring your child to Dovercourt before beginning the program to familiarize him/her with our centre. Many of our participants get to know Dovercourt through our open and family swims or just coming to play on the play structures in the park. If you are interested in one of our child care programs, or have questions, please feel free to call us or come in for a tour and see the program.
Snow Days & Bus Cancellations
In the event of school bus cancellations or snow days, all our programs (before/after school) will remain open. Although busses are not running, parents are welcome to drop their child off at our center during program hours. We will still run a walking school bus to our only walking school, Broadview. We do not walk to schools that we do not normally walk to (ie. Churchill). Our chartered bus to Churchill and Woodroffe will not run this day.
Please note that on snow days, we too have staff who may not be able to attend work, so we will run modified programming for the day. Kids are not allowed to spend the whole day here; it is not a PD Day. They can only attend during the hours of the program that they are registered for.
