Our Program Leaders
Our Program Leaders, Counselors and Junior Counselors are selected with careful attention paid to selecting those who have the ability to serve as a positive role model for your child. Each staff member must have a valid standard level first aid certificate and Level C CPR in addition to a vulnerable sector police records check and HIGH FIVE certification. All staff members receive training in leading activities, group dynamics, communications, problem solving, accident prevention, emergency response, as well as Dovercourt Policies and Procedures.
Registration for all Out of School Care programs for the 2013-2014 school year is now open, and is on-going throughout the year. Please note that registration must be done in person and deposits are due at the time of registration and are non-refundable. Registration for the 2014-2015 school year will begin in March 2014.

The Program - Grade 1-5:
Our daily programs are planned in advance and approved by management. The balanced schedule for each day includes quiet games and active play both indoors and outdoors. On good weather days, most activities will take place outdoors. From 3:30-4:15, there are three choices of activities in three different locations, with an experienced Program Leader, councilors and junior councilors in each space. At 4:15 each day participants are presented with day’s activities and information on any exciting events that are coming up. From 4:30-5:30, participants will again choose which activity location they want to go to (Mon, Wed, Fri) or they will join their club (Tues & Thurs). From 5:30-6:00pm, we offer quieter games and activities while the participants are signed out by a parent.
Activities are planned around a specific theme each month. Theme and activity information is available on our After School bulletin board located in the upstairs lobby, and in our monthly e-newsletter sent to all participants.
Some examples of our favourite special events: Twinkle Show, Senators Game, Sleepover, Spooktacular Movie Night, and Fall & Spring family BBQs.
Our grade 1-5 After-School program has ‘club days’ that run on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 6-8 weeks. Participants will sign up for their choice of clubs one week prior to the start date. Clubs are skill-based and developmental, and participants who choose a Tuesday Club or Thursday Club are committed to that group for the full session. Some examples: Glee, Lego, with Ian Dudley, Ottawa’s “Lego Guy”, Adventure Sports, Culinary, Drama, Cartooning, Fashion, Carpentry, Electronics, Diabolo with “The Cowguys”, and Pottery.
The Program - Kindergarten:
Similar to the Grade 1-5 program, each month the program will have a specific theme to which all activities are planned. The program plans for each week are available in advance and posted on the Kindergarten bulletin board located outside the café. Kindergarten After School participants remain together as a group with the Kindergarten Program Leader and have their own room and their own activity schedule separate from the Grade 1-5 program. The program plans for the kindergarten program are completed in advance and approved by management. The focus is on structured play with a balance of active games and sports as well as quiet games and crafts.
The Program – Youth Zone (Grade 6):
This program has been developed to cater to the needs of our Grade 6 participants. With two talented program leaders and their own ‘clubhouse’ space, this program offers Grade 6 participants a safe and fun environment and opportunity to develop skills, make new friends and become leaders in the community. Youth Zone participants are involved in the program planning for the year, and work with their leaders to plan fundraisers (for example, selling Candy-grams in February) and fun events like pizza & movie nights. Youth Zone participants also participate in clubs (see above description) and Friday swim times.
Swimming is integrated into the after school program for children in all grades K-6. Each Friday, the After School program has a swim time from 4:00-4:30pm and participants are encouraged to bring their bathing suits and towels on Fridays.
Transportation is provided for students from Broadview Public School (walking school bus), Churchill Alternative School (chartered bus), and Woodroffe Ave Public School (OCTranspo). For all other schools, please contact your child’s school to make bussing arrangements, or call us so that we can help to make arrangements. All participants are met as they get off the bus and signed in with one of our Program Supervisors. Students at Broadview Public School are signed in at the dismissal bell at their designated meeting spot in the gymnasium before walking back to the centre. Parents of any child that does not arrive to Dovercourt’s Afterschool program will be phoned by a Supervisor immediately to ensure that the child is accounted for.
Full year: $2680
We offer a payment plan of 10 equal payments that can be set up using a credit card or EFT.
After school swim lessons:
Our After School program has designated group swim lesson times. These programs last for 9 weeks and continue throughout the school year:
2012-2013 Afterschool Swim Lessons: Mondays, 4:40 - 5:20
Participants who have registered for these specific swim lessons will be escorted to and from the pool by a staff member.
For those new to Dovercourt Recreation Centre, the first day of After School can be as scary as the first day of school no matter what grade you’re in. For that reason, we recommend you bring your child to Dovercourt before beginning the program to familiarize him/her with our centre. Many of our participants get to know Dovercourt through our open and family swims or just coming to play on the play structures in the park. If you are interested in one of our child care programs, or have questions, please feel free to call us or come in for a tour and see the program.
Breakfast Club: Kindergarten to Grade 6
Monday to Friday 7:00am – 9am
Breakfast Club offers supervised play and activities for children in kindergarten to grade 6. Includes a healthy, fun breakfast menu and exciting activities. For those who have energy to burn before school, the gym is open for active games such as indoor soccer and this year’s favourite: Scooter mini-stick hockey.
Supervised Transportation is provided for students from Broadview Public School (walking school bus), Churchill Alternative School (chartered bus), and Woodroffe Ave Public School (OCTranspo). For all other schools, please contact your child’s school to make bussing arrangements, or call us so that we can help to make arrangements.
