General Camp Information

Registration
Registration for Summer Camp 2008 opens Jan. 2. You can register in person (411 Dovercourt Ave.), online or by phone (798-8950). Payments are accepted by cash, debit, cheque, VISA, Master Card or American Express. A financial assistance program is available; please contact the Manager of Administration & Communications at 798-8950 ext. 245.

Our Staff
We employ approximately 60 staff to lead our camp activities. Staff are selected based on their desire to work with children, their experience and their creativity. Camp staff must also hold current certificates in First Aid, CPR, High Five: Principles of Healthy Child Development, and police clearance.

Our Facilities
Camps for ages 4 and 5 yrs will be held at Dovercourt Recreation Centre. Camps for ages 6 and older may make use of offsite locations within walking distance of the community centre. Camp drop off and pick up is always at Dovercourt Recreation Centre.

Child Safety

Dovercourt takes pride in its safe and fun programs. The key to a safe camp is effective supervision. We maintain the following staff to camper ratio: 4 years of age – 1:6, 5 years of age – 1:8, 6 to 12 years of age - 1:10.

Non-Resident Fee
A 20% non-resident fee applies if the participant is not a resident of the City of Ottawa. This fee is charged to each participant for each registration.

Refund Policy
Refunds will be given up to one week prior to the start date of the camp. A $10.00 administration fee will apply.

What to Bring
All camps make use of indoor and outdoor environments. Children should bring a water bottle, sunscreen, a hat, sweater and rain gear as required. Children should be comfortable carrying their own belongings. Please send your child with a morning and afternoon snack (as well as one for post camp if applicable) and lunch. The Café is not always available for purchases.

Adam’s Apple Café
Once again this year Adam’s Apple Café is offering their “Bag Lunch Program”. Campers can purchase bag lunches on a weekly or daily basis. Details available at Adam’s Apple Café or call 729-1151.

Campers not participating in the bag lunch program will not be able to purchase their lunch from the Café. We do not have the staff available to accompany children to the Café and some camps are offsite. The exception will be the weekly BBQs held on Wednesday’s
for onsite camps only.

Valuables
We highly recommend that children do not bring valuables with them to camp. We cannot guarantee the security of items such as game boys, trading cards, personal radios/CD players etc. We guarantee that they will be so busy at camp they will not need these items!

Medication and Medical Conditions
Should your child require medications to be administered during camp please make note of it on your child’s personal information form. Please note we are an “allergy aware” facility but cannot ban substances that may cause allergic reactions due to the public nature of our facilities and a false sense of security “banning” may develop.

Campers with Special Needs
Dovercourt is committed to the inclusion of people with special needs in all of our programs and services. Please make us aware of any issues or resources that your child may need to participate. Dovercourt works with the City of Ottawa’s special needs department to help accomplish this inclusion. If your camper has special conditions requiring assistance please contact Heather Asselstine at 798-8950 exxt. 230 to make the necessary arrangements.

Camp Check In
All camps begin their day at Dovercourt Recreation Centre (Westboro Park Field). Please drop off your camper between 8:45-9:00am at their camp sign. Mini Munchkin camp drop off is at 539 Wavell, at the McKellar Fieldhouse.

Camp Check Out
All camp participants will end their day at Dovercourt. Camp check out will take place between 4:00-4:15pm in the Westboro Park Field. On rainy days an alternative check out point will take place inside Dovercourt Recreation Centre.

Pre & Post Camp
Pre and Post camp are available from 7:30–8:45am and 4:15-6:00pm for $28.00 / week. Participants are offered a wide variety of activity choices including active games, board games, stories, arts and crafts. Children registered in Pre and Post camp will be checked in and out of camp by our camp staff.

Swim Lessons
Swim lessons are available for your child age 4-6 years before camp and children 7 years and older after camp. Please review the information below before registering your child in camp swim lessons.

4 to 6 years (8:30am classes only)
Parents are asked to have their child(ren) on the deck ready to swim with all their personal belongings with them (not in a locker). We will see that they are assisted to change if necessary & escorted to their camp after their swim lessons.

7 years and older (3:50pm classes only)
Participants will be escorted to their lessons. Following lessons parents please pick up your child at post camp care, if registered in pre and post camp, or on the pool deck. Children picked up at the pool must be signed out with the pool supervisor. Note: Older children in post camp are not directly supervised in the changeroom and parents who are not comfortable with this should personally supervise them.

  Junior Camp Counsellors

Click for an application (pdf).

Dovercourt’s high standards for camp counsellors and our reputation as a great place to work often means those who have completed their Leaders In Training still may not have enough experience to successfully compete for work at Dovercourt. To help those who have completed their LIT requirements and would like to work for Dovercourt in the future there is the Junior Counsellor Program.

This program has been in place since 1998 and today a number of staff were employed as Junior Counsellors. Junior Counsellors are used throughout our camp programs to assist in program delivery and supervision. In return, we provide them with the critical “experience” sought by employers and parents of children who would be in their care. They also receive an end of summer performance appraisal as well as ongoing feedback and coaching from our staff. Junior Counsellors receive an honorarium each week.

Auditions for Junior Counsellors are held in the Spring of each year. Applications are available at Dovercourt Recreation Centre or on our website www.dovercourt.org. Prerequisites include: Leaders In Training Program, Standard Level First Aid, Level C CPR and High Five.

mabel's labels logo

At the end of summer, there is always a pile of campers belongings left at camp. This is an expensive waste for our campers (and their parents!) As a way to target the problem of lost belongings and a large lost and found closet, we are encouraging our campers to label all belongings.

We have partnered with Mabel's Labels, a company with all types of labels that are colourful, indestructable and fun! With a special 'camp pack' available and also a larger combo pack, your camper can label absolutely everything!

Go to http://camps.mabel.ca and select our camp name, "Dovercourt Recreation Centre" from the drop down list.

We look forward to sending campers home with ALL their belongings this summer!
