A message from the Board

As you may know, Dovercourt Recreation Association recently made a proposal for an alternative service delivery model for enhanced senior and adult programming at the Churchill Seniors’ Centre. Dovercourt is an organization that makes a sincere effort to work with other organizations to advance its mission of providing recreation programs and services for all ages and abilities in our community. We are committed to fulfilling our organizational goals of improved service for seniors and adults, and optimized use of public recreation facilities in our community. Following discussions with the Friends of Churchill Seniors, and hearing their plans and vision for the centre, Dovercourt has decided to acknowledge their efforts by withdrawing our proposal. We look forward to working with the Friends of Churchill Seniors, our community and the City of Ottawa in this regard. Click here to see our letter to the Friends of Churchill

Message from the President:

As Dovercourt began its third decade of operations, it upheld its reputation as a preeminent provider of recreation services in Ottawa.

The centre continued to introduce innovative recreation programs and to increase its client base. The Centre has been one of the busiest in Ottawa for a number of years, but this growth trend is particularly remarkable because there has been no material physical expansion. Dovercourt staff demonstrate creativity in many areas, including devising ways to increase usage of the existing space. Expansion of the Centre on Dovercourt Avenue is not a desirable or even a viable option. However, as demand continues to grow, so will the pressures on space, so we are actively seeking new locations to meet our community’s needs.

We have continued to upgrade our facility, using both our own funds and with the help of generous corporate sponsors. Clients and staff alike have taken great pleasure in the waterfall garden (donated by the Pond Clinic), while renovations to the cottage (assisted by Jay M Contruction) and the Neighbourhood Services Box (thanks to Ottawa Home Improvements) have enhanced the attractiveness of the park.

Dovercourt’s solid operational performance has permitted the Board focus more on the role the Centre can play in community development. Over the years, Dovercourt has made a significant contribution to the health of the community, through programs such as Swim to Survive and community special events like the Principals Breakfast, Music in the Park and the Winter Carnival. During the past year, it enhanced its financial assistance programs and the promotion of the “last minute club”, and promoted inclusion for those with who have disabilities through working with All Abilities Welcome. Community partners are an invaluable source of information about community needs; during the year Dovercourt was in touch with some 50 local agencies and a range of other community groups, and will continue to strengthen those links going forward.

In addition to collaborating with community based groups, Dovercourt is also developing a network of sponsors, and it grateful for the program support they can provide. Dovercourt continues to offer children and youth a free Friday night open swim (thanks to Martin Elder), and our younger clients have taken great pleasure in the bouncy house (donated by the Morris Home Team).

I would also like to thank retiring members Naida Hyndman, Kevin McKinnon and Ashley Wright for their contributions to Dovercourt. We will miss their experience and wise counsel. However, we were pleased to welcome four new members in June 2008 (Denise Deby, Johanna Leffler, Mike Davis and Harold Paddison).
2008 was a good year for Dovercourt, and 2009 promises new opportunities and challenges.

Meet some of your Board of Directors

Margot Sunter
Margot joined the Board in September, 2006. She contributes her professional skill and experience to our Finance Committee and is more than able to de-mystify the intricacies of Dovercourt’s finances to the more ‘numerically-challenged’ members around the table. In the past, she has served as Dovercourt’s Director of Finance and Administration.

Margot had been motivated to join Dovercourt’s Board as she was impressed by Dovercourt’s role in building a strong community, “not only in our own backyard, but as a leader in community initiatives.”

Over the years, Margot and her family have been involved in almost every aspect of Dovercourt’s programming. The children had enjoyed the many programs and camps, and are now involved in the Leadership programs so that they can become counselors.

Margot is a Certified General Accountant who has specialized in not-for-profit and charity accounting for over 15 years. She is currently the Director of Finance and Administration for the Community Foundation of Ottawa, and volunteers as Treasurer for the Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary. In her ‘spare’ time, she attends her children’s many sporting activities, trains for marathons along the Ottawa River or Rideau Canal Pathways and plays ‘Ultimate.’

donnaDonna Matheson
Donna has served on Dovercourt’s Board for the past three years, within the last year as Secretary.

Donna had been aware of Dovercourt, having attended aerobics classes, however her involvement grew as did her family, joining Sporty Moms and becoming a quick Dovercourt convert, she has attended three Sporty Moms sessions, numerous swimming lessons, yoga, Pilates, Spinning, aerobics, summer camps and other kids’ programs. Donna and her family frequently use both the pool and the playground.

Motivation to join Dovercourt’s board came from Donna’s positive impression of the facility, programs, staff, community, accessibility and their progressive attitudes. “I wanted to give something back and to learn about the background goings-on that make DRA so successful.” She also serves on the School Council at St. George’s school.

Donna works part-time as an Occupational Therapist with DMARehability, specializing in upper extremity rehabilitation, ergonomics and return-to-work planning. Her family includes husband Rob and children, Reilly 7, Jenna 5, and Declan 3. She is registered with the Ontario College of Occupational Therapists and a member of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists, Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists and World Federation of Occupational Therapists. Donna is an avid cross-country and downhill skier and enjoys biking and running.

Shelley Ann Morris
Shelley Ann has served on the Board of Directors for just over two years. She has served on the Playstructure Committee and has nominated Dovercourt for numerous community awards. She is now looking forward to participating in Dovercourt’s Fund Raising committee.

An avid fitness participant, Shelley was motivated to become a Board Member because of Dovercourt’s reputation for inclusiveness. “Our Executive Director says, ‘at Dovercourt, it isn’t a special event when a person with disabilities comes to participate.’” Shelley is constantly impressed with the level of professionalism and attention paid to customer service as staff and volunteers in all programs make accommodations to enable people of all abilities to feel welcome.

Shelley Ann is a ‘regular’ at the ‘court, cross-training in the Group Fitness/Spinning program and the occasional session on the Eliptical in preparation for her annual race up the CN Tower’s steps. After 10+ years in the employment field helping people with employment barriers, Shelley is now in the midst of a career change of her own.

Lori Bender
Lori was motivated to join our Board because she enjoyed Dovercourt’s programs and atmosphere and wanted to contribute to its continued success. Lori will be able to draw on her management consulting skills and experience to assist the Board to function effectively. “Serving as a board member will be a learning opportunity for me as well as an opportunity for me to make meaningful contributions to an important organization.”

Lori is honoured to be involved with our organization. Along with Dovercourt’s excellent reputation in our community, Lori is attracted to DRA for its combination of business and community issues and priorities addressed by our board. She will add her voice to influencing decisions which affect both the recreation center and the larger community.

Lori, her husband and four children have made extensive use of Dovercourt’s programs, including group fitness, yoga, children’s birthday parties, dance lessons, swimming lessons, KinderKorner, Westboro Nursery School and Summer camps.

Maria Bacile
Maria was impressed with the quality and extensiveness of the services provided by Dovercourt. “I was looking for a way to contribute back to the community and wanted to be part of an organization with a reputation such as Dovercourt.” Maria is looking forward to meeting new people and helping to organize events.

Maria lives in our neighbouthood, therefore she is a regular participant in many of Dovercourt’s activities, including Spinning classes. Maria has rented the swimming pool for an amazing party. Maria is a Human Resources Director who enjoys playing Ultimate, running and has recently developed a keen interest in Orienteering

Susan Fletcher
Susan Fletcher joined the Board of Dovercourt Recreation Association in May 2009.

Susan has lived in Westboro for over 25 years, and she and her family have extensively used Dovercourt’s fitness and children’s programs. In recent years she continues to be a regular at the 6:30am group fitness and her 2 grandsons have both attended the nursery school.

Susan is an active volunteer also serving on the Cabinet of the Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign and canvassing for various charities. In the past she chaired the board of a small private school that was also a charity and non-profit, and has served in a variety of other board functions for other voluntary sector organizations.

Susan recently retired as a senior federal public servant after a career of 37 years. In her last position she was an Assistant Deputy Minister running one of Health Canada’s business lines. This entailed a budget of $200+ million and a staff distributed across the country of some 1400 people. As a result she is a seasoned leader and manager, comfortable with articulating the vision of an organization, identifying and dealing with complex problems, communicating with a variety of audiences and leading a diverse group. She brings these skill sets to the Board.

Susan sees Dovercourt as an amazing resource to the local community, as well as to people across Ottawa who use its facilities. Susan wants to be involved in its continued relevance and growth. She believes that the Dovercourt Recreation Association can and should remain a key player in the community providing high-quality, effective and cost-efficient services for young people, families and mature adults and that it will continue to be recognized as “the community organization” in Ottawa.
